I stopped getting professional manicures during COVID in 2020—and honestly, I haven't looked back!
At $50+ per professional manicure, the cost adds up quickly. Over the past six years, doing my own nails at home has saved me thousands of dollars, and I actually really enjoy having the freedom to change my nail color whenever I want.
My secret? A simple at-home gel manicure kit with a UV light from Amazon.
It has become one of those purchases that I can confidently say has paid for itself over and over again.
My At-Home Gel Manicure Setup
Back in 2020, I purchased a gel manicure kit from Amazon that came with a UV light and everything I needed to get started. And here's the thing that has surprised me the most: Six years later, that same UV light is still working perfectly! That's pretty impressive for a purchase I originally made on a whim.
I've linked the updated version of the gel manicure kit below since the exact one I purchased several years ago may no longer be available.
I've found that doing my nails at home gives me results I really love without having to make an appointment, drive somewhere, sit in a salon, or spend $50+ every few weeks. And as a busy mom, the convenience is honestly just as valuable as the money I've saved.
The Cost of Doing My Nails at Home
One of the biggest reasons I haven't gone back to professional manicures is simply the cost.
If you're spending around $50 on a manicure every few weeks, you're easily spending hundreds of dollars a year just to keep your nails looking nice.
Instead, I made the initial investment in my gel manicure kit and now I can purchase new gel colors whenever I want.
Many of the Beetles gel polish colors I've purchased on Amazon have been around $5–$10, depending on the set. That's a pretty big difference from buying individual name-brand polishes at the store—or paying salon prices every few weeks. And because the bottles last for multiple manicures, one color can go a surprisingly long way.
My Fall Gel Nail Colors
This Fall, I decided to do something a little different.
Instead of choosing one moody Fall color like I normally would, I went with...FOUR.
That's right. Four different colors!
And I absolutely love how they turned out.
They're playful and colorful while somehow still feeling a little moody and Fall-ish. Just like me. 😂
The colors are all from different Beetles Gel Polish sets I've purchased from Amazon over the years.
I love having a little collection of colors at home because it means I can mix and match depending on my mood, the season, or honestly...whatever I happen to be wearing.
Why I Love Doing My Nails at Home
After six years of doing my own gel manicures, these are some of my favorite things about it:
It's much more affordable
The biggest win is obviously the money.
Instead of spending $50+ every time I want my nails done, I can do them at home for a fraction of the cost.
I can change colors whenever I want
I'm not committed to one color for weeks at a time.
Feeling Fall colors? Done.
Want something bright and summery? Easy.
Want four colors because apparently choosing one is too difficult?
Also totally acceptable.
I don't need an appointment
There's something really nice about being able to do my nails whenever I have the time.
No scheduling. No driving. No waiting.
Just me, my nail supplies, and usually a show playing in the background.
My original UV lamp has lasted for years
This might honestly be my favorite part.
I purchased my original gel manicure kit in 2020, and the UV light is still working perfectly today. That's six years of use from one purchase!

If you're interested in trying an at-home gel manicure, these are the products I've personally purchased and used.
Gel Manicure Kit with UV Light
The original kit I purchased in 2020 has lasted me for years. I've linked the updated version here.
Beetles Gel Polish Sets I have purchased several different Beetles sets over the years, and they're an easy way to build up a collection of colors without spending a fortune.
Is an At-Home Gel Manicure Worth It?
For me, absolutely.
I originally bought my kit because I wanted to save money, but six years later, I also love the convenience and creativity of doing my nails myself.
I've saved thousands of dollars compared with regularly getting professional manicures, and I get to experiment with different colors whenever I want.
Sometimes the best money-saving swaps aren't about giving something up—they're about finding a way to do something you already enjoy for less.
And this is one of those swaps that has genuinely stuck with me.
So if you've been thinking about trying an at-home gel manicure, this is your sign to give it a try!
And if you end up doing four Fall colors instead of one...
I fully support it. 😂
